Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils which is commonly caused by a viral infection, and more rarely by bacterial infections. Anyone can get tonsillitis, although it most commonly occurs in children.

Symptoms of tonsillitis:

Sore throat
Painful or difficulty in swallowing
Red tonsils with white or yellow spots
Headache
Bad breath
Raspy voice
Fever
Tenderness of the neck and jaw

       Medical Treatments

Your doctor will examine your throat and recommend doing a throat culture in order to determine whether or not you have tonsillitis. In case of common cold, there is no need for medical treatment. However, if you have severe tonsillitis, you will have to undergo certain therapies, including:

Administration of antibiotics

If your tonsillitis is caused by bacterial infection, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics. You need to complete the treatment to prevent the growth of more powerful bacteria strain that may become resistant to low doses of antibiotics. Also, your doctor will schedule a follow-up examination to determine whether the treatment was effective.

Surgical removal of the tonsils

Tonsillectomy is a surgical removal of the tonsils and it is usually recommended for people who experience tonsillitis repeatedly and for those who fail to respond to other medical treatment or are at risk of the complications of tonsillitis.
